There is no doubt you have seen coconut water and coconut oil absolutely everywhere these days as it seems to be all the rage and the latest superfood. Well it’s for good reason too, there are so many benefits to our bodies that we would go as far to say it’s our number one superfood. Before you think that we have jumped on this superfood bandwagon, we have been using it in numerous ways for well over ten years. It has been used on hair for thousands of years as it contains hair strengthening properties that protect against hair loss, as it binds fatty acids to hair proteins offering protection from root to tip. Its great for the skin as it is contains anti ageing properties that can heal and repair damaged skin and reduce scarring by strengthening connecting tissue. Coconut oil is one of those foods that seems to have a endless uses and before we even talk about eating it, here is one more for you. It can be used as a base for tooth paste mix it with a little bit of bi carb soda, and you have a natural toothpaste free of harmful chemicals and cleaning agents. Coconut oil is antibacterial and has been shown to be very effective at killing all the nasties including bad bacteria in your mouth. Coconut is highly nutritious and rich in fibre, vitamins, and minerals. it possesses healing properties far beyond that of any other oil and is extensively used in traditional medicine among asian and Pacific populations. Coconut oil has copped a bad wrap and labelled a BAD fat and once mistakenly believed to be unhealthy because of its high saturated fat content, but it is a very unique oil and is different from all other fats. The saturated fatty acids in coconut oil are predominantly medium chain fatty acids and are absorbed for quick energy and contribute to the health of the immune system. It can be described as a Fat burning fat because coconut oil doesn’t raise blood sugar levels, it helps speed up the metabolism and is not stored as fat. It can reduce your hunger by increasing ketone bodies in your blood supplying energy for our brain improving brain function and it can also help the body dramatically reduce belly fat in the abdominal cavity and around organs. We could go on and on about the uses and benefits but your challenge tomorrow is to start using coconut with your cooking instead of harmful vegetable oils, on your seeded toast as butter or if you can handle it do what i do and have tablespoon every morning and swish it around your mouth called ‘oil pulling’ then spit it out. Of course if you want to use it as a moisturiser and hair tonic go for it, we do. It’s a great to use for that afternoon energy slump. So it time to go COCONUTS. Enjoy.
